Autumn is here - What do I need to know about my green roof?
Autumn Green Roofs
Green roofs in Autumn. As Autumn approaches in September you will notice some differences with your green roof. Most sedum species will start to take on a reddy- brownish colour. This is completely normal and proves the sedum is healthy. Whereas some wildflower and grass roofs die back in the winter, sedum sticks out the cold weather and stays alive all year round. Sedum leafs may look smaller in Autumn compared to winter as they do not need to retain the water they require too in the summer.
Maintenance in Autumn
We recommend maintenance on your green roof twice a year. Sedum roofs are low maintenance but a quick routine check is vital for keeping it healthy and to prevent large expenses repairing damaged roofs after a period of time neglected.
The maintenance is best carried out my green roof experts as they understand what to look out for and can easily replaces bare patches or fix repairs. However some green roofs may only require this once a year if you can carry out some basic checks yourself.
What should I check on my green roof in Autumn?
- Check for blocked drainage outlets and remove any debris. These are extremley important for those wet winter months to allow easy water run off. Once the bad winter weather arrives it is dangerous and not recommended to be getting up on a green roof. Therefore we recommended carrying out these checks early Autumn.
- Remove fallen leafs from the green roof plants. These will only go soggy and begin to break down on your sedum or wildflowers, which could have an impact on their survivial.
- Take note of any sparse patches, so these can be booked in for maintenance in the spring.
- If you have a wildflower or bio diverse roof system you can cut back any dieing plants. However do not cut below 10cm to avoid damage and allow a covering to protect the winter insects.
Another great trick in Autumn is to add some insect hotels onto your green roof. They are excellent for providing adequate habitats for wildlife and insects. Protecting them from the winter elements. Helping the surrounding wildlife and insects will encourage more year on year. Insect hotels can be purchased from most home or garden stores or make one yourself.
Autumn is also a great time to install your green roof system if you don't have one already. We recommended installing green roofs in Spring or Autumn when it is not to hot & dry or cold & wet. Call our team to discuss your requirements.
