Don’t Wreck Your Living Roof: 10 Green Roof Mistakes Sedum Supply Advises You Must Avoid

You’re ready to transform your roof into a thriving, eco-friendly haven with a beautiful green roof. This is a brilliant investment, offering fantastic benefits from boosting biodiversity to managing stormwater.

But here’s the truth: a successful green roof isn’t just about throwing some plants on your existing roof. It requires expert knowledge and quality materials. As the UK’s oldest independent green roof supplier, with years of hands-on experience in the roofing and horticultural industry, Sedum Supply has seen it all.

We’ve compiled a list of the Top 10 crucial mistakes people make when designing and installing a green roof on their property. Avoid these pitfalls, and you’ll ensure your living roof flourishes for years to come!

The Top 10 Things Not to Do with a Green Roof

1. Using Poor Quality Growing Medium

This is one of the most frequent and fatal errors. You might think “soil is soil,” but a standard garden topsoil is far too heavy and nutrient-rich for a low-maintenance, extensive sedum roof.

• The Problem: Poor quality or non-specialist growing medium retains too much water, leading to a dangerously heavy roof load, poor drainage, and an abundance of unwanted grasses and weeds that thrive on high nutrients, choking out your sedum.

• The Sedum Supply Solution: We supply specialist, lightweight, and mineral-based GRO Compliant Growing Medium. This is specifically engineered with the correct water retention and drainage properties, offering the low nutrient base that sedum requires to thrive and resist weed invasion.

2.  Skipping the Growing Medium Layer Entirely

Some try to cut corners by placing sedum blankets or mats directly onto the drainage layer or waterproof membrane.

  • The Problem: Your plants will not have sufficient nutrients and base to grow and flourish. Even the most resilient sedum needs some substrate to root into, anchor itself, and draw micro-nutrients from. Without it, the system will eventually fail.
  • The Sedum Supply Solution: Our comprehensive Green Roof Packs always include the essential layers: a root-resistant membrane, a drainage layer, a filter fleece, and the correct depth of specialised Growing Medium to ensure maximum plant health and longevity.

3. Installing an Automatic Irrigation System (For Extensive Sedum)

While intensive green roofs (like rooftop gardens with deep soil) need irrigation, an extensive sedum roof is designed to be naturally drought-tolerant and low-maintenance.

  • The Problem: Sedum plants are succulent and do not require excessive watering. Applying too much, or automatically, will over-saturate the plants, causing them to fail, rot, and, ironically, encourage grasses and weeds to take hold instead.

  • The Sedum Supply Solution: We advise against permanent irrigation for standard sedum roofs. Focus on proper substrate and drainage, and only water manually very occasionally during prolonged, extreme dry spells once established.

4. Forgetting Initial Post-Installation Watering

A few dry days immediately after installation can be the kiss of death for newly laid sedum.

  • The Problem: Not allowing some watering at intervals for the first week following install during dry weather periods can mean plants are unable to settle and establish roots, impacting the plant health and growing medium.

  • The Sedum Supply Solution: We always recommend an initial thorough watering immediately after installation and then a daily check for the first week. If the weather is dry, a light, interim watering will help the plants and the growing medium settle.

5. Ignoring Your Roof’s Structural Load Capacity

A green roof, especially when fully saturated with rainwater, adds significant weight.

  • The Problem: Installing a system that is too heavy for your existing structure can lead to dangerous roof deflection or collapse.
  • The Sedum Supply Solution: Our extensive sedum systems are inherently lightweight (often around 50-100kg/m² when saturated). We can advise on maximum saturated weights and recommend the right system (such as our lighter weight slim sedum trays) to ensure your structure is safe and compliant.

6. Skipping the Root-Resistant Waterproof Layer

Standard roof waterproofing membranes are not always designed to withstand plant root penetration.

  • The Problem: Aggressive roots, though rare with sedum, can find weak points and penetrate non-root-resistant membranes, leading to expensive leaks and structural damage.

  • The Sedum Supply Solution: We provide and recommend high-quality, proven EPDM Waterproofing Membranes, specifically designed to be root-resistant, offering a robust shield for your property.

7. Failing to Plan for Adequate Drainage

A green roof retains water, but it must also allow excess water to drain away freely.

  • The Problem: Inadequate drainage, or blocked outlets, can cause waterlogging, root rot, and excessive weight build-up on the roof.
  • The Sedum Supply Solution: Our systems include a dedicated Drainage Layer designed to create an air void beneath the growing medium and funnel excess water efficiently to your roof outlets. Always ensure outlets are clear and accessible!

8. Neglecting Edge Retention and Fire Breaks

The edges of your roof are critical for both stability and safety.

  • The Problem: Without proper edging, growing medium and plants can erode or slip off the roof. Furthermore, failing to incorporate a non-combustible gravel perimeter is a serious fire risk and often a breach of building regulations.

  • The Sedum Supply Solution: We offer a range of specialist Retention Trims and advise on the correct use of a non-combustible material (such as gravel) around the perimeter, parapet walls, and skylights to meet both aesthetic and safety standards.

9.  Not Allowing for Any Maintenance

Sedum roofs are low-maintenance, but they are not zero-maintenance.

  • The Problem: Believing the roof is “set and forget” leads to a build-up of wind-blown weeds and excessive growth, which can compromise the sedum’s health and the roof’s drainage.

  • The Sedum Supply Solution: We recommend a minimum of two maintenance checks per year (spring and autumn) for light weeding (removing any large weeds and saplings) and applying a slow-release green roof fertiliser to keep your sedum healthy and vibrant. Our team can offer advice on best ways to maintain your roof on request.

10. Installing Sedum in Deep Shade

Sedum plants are sun-lovers and require a good amount of light to flourish.

  • The Problem: Trying to grow sedum in a deeply shaded area (such as overshadowed by tall adjacent buildings) will result in sparse, leggy, and unhealthy plants that eventually fail.

  • The Sedum Supply Solution: Our experts can review your property’s aspect and, if a large area is shaded, recommend a different planting approach, such as our Wildflower Turf or a specialist biodiverse mix, which is better suited to partial shade conditions.
