We’re thrilled to share a truly unique project which developed over two years: a wildflower meadow roof for a stunning new build nestled in the heart of the countryside.
From the very beginning, the focus of this development was on creating a home that seamlessly blended with its rural surroundings. The beautiful rural scenery was a key part in the choice of location for this unique home, so a development that reflected this was essential.
The architects were able to bring to design the dream envisioned by the project owners, a dwelling that embraced the natural beauty of the area while incorporating cutting-edge green building technologies. Here’s where Sedum Supply came in.
Our first task was to ensure the roof’s structural integrity. We collaborated with a trusted waterproofing company to create a robust, waterproof base – the foundation for our wildflower haven. Once the waterproofing was complete, it was time for the real magic to begin.
Instead of traditional sedum carpet, we opted for a unique approach: a grow-on-site wildflower meadow. We supplied a specially formulated seed mix specifically chosen to thrive in the local climate while ensuring the installation would be easy to maintain. The seed mix chosen boasted a vibrant array of native wildflowers, ensuring a beautiful and ecologically beneficial rooftop ecosystem.
The journey from seed to established meadow wasn’t instant. Over the past two years, we’ve provided ongoing support and maintenance advice to the homeowners.
This included proper watering schedules when considering the particularly prolonged wet weather periods and ensuring optimal conditions for the wildflowers to flourish.
Today, the wildflower meadow roof stands proudly atop the property. The now fully established rooftop provides a vibrant tapestry of colour that complements the surrounding landscape. But the benefits extend far beyond aesthetics. This living roof:
• Provides vital habitat for pollinators like bees and butterflies, a crucial element in a healthy ecosystem.
• Offers natural insulation, helping to regulate the temperature inside the home and reducing energy consumption.
• Manages rainwater runoff, reducing strain on drainage systems and mimicking natural water absorption patterns.
