Advice for Green Roof Maintenance to keep your plants healthy.
A benefit of green roofs when installed correctly and effectively is that they require minimal maintenance. Minimal does not mean no maintenance required, however.
Our guide will provide easy advice on how to keep your sedum or wildflower roof green, healthy and flourishing.
Green Roof Appearance
Depending on the plant mix applied to your roof, as with most plants the appearance will change throughout the year. Seasons and weather conditions may cause changes to colour such as leaves turning red/brown nearing winter months. Sedum carpets contains between 14-17 different plant species when first installed with the more dominant varieties spreading over time.
As with any plants, signs of discolouration or deterioration are signs of concern and should be attended to quickly by yourself or a professional.
When to undertake green roof maintenance
General maintenance of any green roof is recommended during the spring season and performed annually. More frequent maintenance throughout the year will provide greater results and improve overall look of the green roof.
Do you need to water your sedum roof?
Generally, wildflower and sedum roofs should not require watering but will require some during prolonged dry periods without rain most likely during summer months. Sedum plants are more tolerant than more native wildflowers in drier spells, but both benefit from soaking rather than light watering to maintain general longevity.
Feeding green roof plants
Green roofs like any plants will require feeding from time to time. Application of a slow-release nutrient feed will last for 12 months. Applied annually, it will ensure the plants are resistant to extreme weather and temperatures.
