Before starting an installation, it’s essential to assess the structural integrity of your building. Sedum Roofs range from approx. 47kg – 80 kgm2 depending on design. Some green roofs can be heavy, with the potential weight of 170kg – 220 kg/m² for a typical biodiverse wildflower and planted options. If unsure of your current building capacity, we recommend consulting a structural engineer or architect to ensure that your building can support the additional weight. This is particularly beneficial for large scale installations.
Installation of green roofs on sheds or similar outbuildings may not require formal planning permission. However occupied buildings or similar we recommend speaking to your local council building regulations department. Some authorities may have specific guidelines or restrictions that you need to follow as set by the Green Roof Organisation (GRO). Determine the size and shape of your green roof and create a detailed plan. Consider factors such as access, drainage, and any obstructions like vents or chimneys. Before beginning any living roof installation, ensure that the roof surface is clean, free of debris, and in good condition. Repair any leaks, and if necessary, reinforce the roof to support the additional weight. Install a waterproofing membrane to protect the roof structure from water damage.
Proper drainage is crucial to prevent water buildup on the roof. Install a drainage layer, typically consisting of a lightweight, high-water-retention material, over the waterproofing membrane. Include a drainage board to provide additional support and water flow. Additionally, although not necessarily required on a sedum roof, consider installing an irrigation system on other varying types of green roofs systems to ensure certain plants receive adequate water during dry periods.
Apply a layer of lightweight growing medium over the drainage layer. The growing medium should have good water retention properties while allowing excess water to drain effectively. Sedum Supply have a growing medium to match sedum plant choice for any green roof.
Sedum varieties with shallow roots are typically preferred for green roofs. Sedum Supply offer a range of sedum turf and modular products that can help make planting easier. There are up to 12 – 14 varieties of sedum within our range and most can be added at any point.
