A recent trial in Vienna has demonstrated a new approach to green spaces and how further integration of green roofs can help urban spaces and the environment.
A demonstration project by Vienna’s University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) has combined the living roof concept with solar panels to create a more natural garden feeling in areas while still embracing renewable energy technologies.
In the trial, solar panels are positioned on a roof along with the full installation of an accompanying sedum green roof. The combination creates a bio solar roof with the two elements complementing to create greater performance.
Through the addition of the sedum roof system, the development results in a boost of the photovoltaic (PV) technology due to the cooling effect the plants generate while the supporting soil or alternative substrate for the plants can provide the necessary weight to anchor the panels for greater stability.
Another project utilised suspension of semi-translucent solar panels on a pergola in an existing garden along with hanging plants across the structure to enhance an existing open area.
The project demonstrates how further development in implementing green technologies and practices can be applied to deliver broader benefits and at scale.
Along with the obvious energy generation benefits of the solar panels, the green roof addition can also help cool roof surfaces, retain rainwater, attract various animal species and help to clear the air – all highly beneficial in urban spaces where open areas are also a premium.
Though installation of solar green roofs across wider Europe remains limited currently as technologies continue to develop in PV systems, SMARTRoofs have continued to flourish with growing recognition of the biodiversity they can create.
As more seek to develop spaces particularly urban spaces where outdoor gardens are limited and owners seek to greater develop their own spaces, the flexibility in application of green roofs is set to grow. Many are seeking to move away from the limited pot plants on a roof and instead seeking to enhance their living areas further with sedum carpets and other green roof installation.
